Sydney Missionary and Bible College (SMBC) is an independent, evangelical interdenominational[1] Bible college in Sydney, Australia.

The college was formed in 1916 by Rev. C. Benson Barnett. Its goal is to train people for ministry in Australia and abroad.[2] There are two campuses, one in Croydon and a new one in Croydon Park opened in 2010.[3]

According to Eternity newspaper, 'the growth in student numbers created a need for a second campus, a few streets away from its Croydon home. The new campus which opened this year (2010) is named the “Roberts-Dale” Campus after two SMBC martyred graduates from the 1930s and 60’s. SMBC opened several new student housing units on its main campus in 2009.'[4]

The principal of SMBC is David Cook, who celebrated the 25th anniversary of his appointment as Principal in 2010 and maintains the focus of preparing students for cross-cultural gospel work.[5]

Early in 2011 David Cook announced his retirement as Principal of SMBC, effective end 2011.[6]

The Rev Mark Tough is Academic Registrar at SMBC.[7]

SMBC graduates include The Rev Phil Howes from All Saints Anglican Cathedral in Bathurst, overseeing a revitalisation of youth outreach to the Central West of New South Wales, Australia.[8] SMBC also trains and sends a significant number of students proceeding on to missionary work throughout the world.[9]

SMBC has hosted various public talks on issues that confront Christians such as abortion.[10]

History

Sydney Missionary and Bible College is the oldest interdenominational Bible College in Australia. Established in April 1916 by Reverend C Benson Barnett, a returned missionary, with a mission to train people for Christian service in Australia and overseas.

The College began in a leased building at 43 Badminton Road Croydon. Students from Adelaide, Victoria, Queensland, New South Wales and New Zealand were in the initial student intake.

Reverend Barnett wrote in 1916, "not only are we a Bible College, but we are a Missionary College ... we are taught by Christ, that we are to pray to the Lord of the Harvest that He will send forth labourers into His harvest field".[11]

In 1926 the College purchased the leased building it was occupying (called "Ooma") for £2,500. Over the years as the College has grown and expanded additional teaching and residential property has been purchased on Badminton Road. In 2007 a site was purchased in Croydon Park, a few minutes drive from the Croydon campus, for the purpose of building a new premises to cope with the surging demand in enrolments. In 2010 this site was officially opened as the Roberts-Dale adjunct campus.
